Bible Art Journaling
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living..Psalm 27:13
What a great verse with the rock solid hopeful confidence we all need as the people of God.
The goodness of God is not a joke. God’s goodness is what we all need to cling to in the day of trouble in this present life. God’s word gives us these promises of the goodness of Jehovah over and over again. He does this to encourage us and strengthen us.
He knows we need the reminders.
So one way to help with remembering is Bible art journaling. This can be done in a variety of methods, but the main idea is to add personal artwork to a Bible as a way of taking notes. Bible art journaling is clearly more visual than taking simple text notes and the journaler can add their own creativity which often helps the artist remember the biblical concept better. Scripture art journaling can take the form of a few scattered doodles or full-on artwork representing scriptural concepts meaningful to the journaler.
Scripture Journaling
Scripture journaling can genuinely change how a person views the good things of the Lord. During a difficult time we need the good courage that real faith in the beauty of the Lord can provide. Using some sort of art can help get these powerful truths into our core.
So ask yourself: what is the next thing you want to receive from these Bible verses? Help in a the face of uncertainty? Deep confidence in the Lord’s goodness? A confident expectation of God’s hand on your life? You’re not alone. We all desire these things from Christ Jesus and He wants us to have them.
Scripture journaling is one tool to help us get these powerful truths from the Holy Bible off the page and into our hearts.
Watercolor scripture art
Sometimes picking a comfortable art medium for faith art journaling is a sticking point.
I get that.
As an artist, I was drawn to art through certain media, but that changed over time and experience, not surprisingly. The next time – or the first time, if that’s the case – you want to try your hand at Blble art journaling, don’t be stopped by not knowing what art tool to use.
If something particular is calling you, start with that. If not, I recommend starting with something you’ve used before. If that’s markers, then markers it is. If it’s crayons from your childhood, that’s perfect. For me, it’s watercolor or watercolor pencils because that’s what I use the most. I love the medium of watercolor! Here’s a graphic of how I chose to add watercolor to this free printable of Psalm 27 13.
Now for some rules, guidelines, whatever you want to call them.
Art requires the right materials to make it work properly. If you use colored pencils to faith art journal, you’ll probably be ok using those on most any Bible pages you choose.
But if you choose any art media that is wet…markers, watercolors, acrylics, for example, then you’ll need to choose a paper that can hold up to that art medium.
There are Bibles specifically designed to art journal in, so that’s a logical place to start. But sometimes you want to use a favorite Bible, right? There’s no easy answer to this, but the simplest solution I’ve found is to purchase an art sketch pad in the appropriate paper, add the verses from the Old Testament or New Testament to the sketch book and then add your artwork. A quick notation in your actual Bible to the sketchbook page that matches that Bible passage and you’ll always be able to trace your thoughts.
I also recommend dating your scripture art journaling. You’ll want to see how your faith and prayers progress and grow with time and study. This can be incredibly helpful to see your own spiritual growth over time. Very encouraging and the Lord may reveal new insights to you through this process.
Christian Drawings Inspiration
We have been talking about seeing the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living and some general principles on how to art journal your faith. But we haven’t talked about this: what if you don’t feel like you’re an artist? How do you do Christian drawings? How to inspire yourself as you study these powerful Bible verses to take to step to Bible art Journal?
May I suggest doodling?
Truly! Doodling is something we all can do and it’s designed to be representative of an idea – not photo-real.
And that’s perfect.
Christian doodling is a straightforward way to do faith art journaling. It’s a way to get started and build your confidence.
Use your scripture give you inspiration. Our scripture we’re talking about here is from Psalm 27.
As you study the goodness of Yahweh and the good, good gift this is from the Psalm of King David, you can meditate on God’s character. Spend time considering what the passage is saying to you and doodle your thoughts and feelings.
Here’s how I might do this.
After spending some time with the Lord thinking about the passage, some ideas often come to mind for me. They may be related to the passage…they may not. That’s ok! The Lord leads us and that’s what we want, right?
I can write down the words I’m thinking and add doodles to those. Then keep going. Draw what’s in your mind’s eye. Maybe a cross. Maybe your family? For example, if the idea of growing is coming to you, doodle a flower.
I think the really important part for me is color. Color speaks to me about how I’m feeling and so to me, more important than the doodle is the color because that will instantly remind me of what I was feeling next time I look at this in my Bible journal.
Does that make sense? If you want, you can easily buy small packets of Bible doodles online. Print out a couple of pages and simply cut them out and paste them into your journal as you like, embellishing them with color and text.
You’ll get more ideas as you go along. I promise you!
This is simply another way to pray to our good God. In the land of the living.
